Athena’s Windcall
(hmm-mmm,
hmm-mmm)
Oh the wind blew hard off the Aegean blue,
Way, hey, haul away!
From Zeus’s brow the warrior flew,
And the grey-eyed lady said “Hold fast,
crew!” Way, hey,
haul away!
Haul away
for Athena’s name, Way,
hey, haul away!
She don’t love fools or a reckless flame,
She wins her wars with a thinking brain,
Way, hey, haul away!
She ain’t like Ares,
drunk on the fight,
Way, hey, haul away!
She charts the course by the stars at night,
With owl-eyed watch and a spear held tight,
Way, hey, haul away!
Haul away
for Athena’s name,
Way, hey, haul away!
An olive branch and a shield of aim,
She keeps us steady through wind and rain,
Way, hey, haul away!
She stood by Odysseus,
clever and lean,
Way, hey, haul away!
Through wine-dark seas and tricks unseen,
She got him home like she promised the queen,
Way, hey,
haul away!
So pull that rope and mind the plan,
Way, hey, haul away!
Brains beat brawn since the world began,
That’s the lesson taught by the grey-eyed clan,
Way, hey, haul away!
Haul away
for Athena’s name, Way,
hey, haul away!
From Athens’ walls to the open main,
We sail by wit,
not fear or flame,
Way, hey, haul away!
Way, hey, haul away!
(haul away...)
