I found a box beneath the bed
I hadn't opened in years
Dust on the lid,
a faded name
And suddenly I was there
There was Christmas morning in the living room
A tree leaning toward the wall
And everybody smiling at somebody
Just outside the frame
of it all
There's one of Mama in the kitchen
With flour on her sleeve
There's Uncle Ray beside the tree Trying hard to make us believe
That he didn't break the ornament
That somehow hit the floor
And there's a little kid with missing teeth Who isn't little
anymore
Old Christmas photographs Don't say a single word
But somehow when I look at them I hear everything I heard
The laughter in the hallway
The dishes in the sink
The people that I loved the most Before I knew how fast
life moves Before I had to think
Here's Dad asleep beside the fireplace
Here's Grandma pouring tea
Here's somebody's dog wearing a ribbon Staring straight back at me
Here's a room we thought we'd always have Here's a face I
can't call now
Funny how a picture holds a moment Long after the moment's gone
somehow
We never knew we were making memories
We thought we were just there
Opening presents, eating dinner
Laughing underneath the stairs If I'd known how much I'd miss it
I might've stayed a little longer
But maybe that's what pictures are for
They let you go back when you're older
Old Christmas photographs
Still waiting in that box
A whole room full of Christmas
Frozen in a little clock
And everybody's younger
And nobody has to leave
For just a little while tonight
They're all back here with me
So I'll put them back together
And leave the box beside the tree
Some things don't disappear with time They just wait for us to
see (hummmmm)
